Germany finds inspiration in Danish hospital reform and e-health solutions

German decision makers visit Denmark to learn about the 2007 structural reform and find inspiration in the new Danish hospital construction projects and e-health solutions.

On August 28-30, 2017, a group of decision makers from the German Ministry of Health, health insurance societies, as well as doctors and representatives from the German Hospital Federation, visited Denmark to learn about the process of the Danish hospital reform, hospital construction projects and innovative e-health solutions.

After arrival in Denmark, the delegates visited the venue of Danish Regions for an introduction to the strategy and politics behind the new hospital constructions by the Danish Ministry of Health and Danish Regions. Furthermore, the delegates met with Morten Elbæk Petersen, CEO of the national e-health portal, Elbæk Petersen gave a presentation on the official portal for the public Danish healthcare services, which enables patients and healthcare professionals to find health information, access personal health information, and communicate.

The next day, the delegation visited the ongoing hospital construction in Hvidovre, in the Capital Region of Denmark, to experience the concept of ‘the patient room of the future’ and learn how the new Shared Emergency Department will set new standards for processes and functionality in the emergency department as well as interdisciplinary collaboration between doctors and nurses. Afterwards, the delegates headed to the venue of the Emergency Medical Service Copenhagen in Ballerup for an introduction to the region’s emergency standby, the 24-hour medical helpline called “1813”. Part of the busy program was also meetings with innovative Danish companies Systematic and Viewcare, who gave a presentation on Danish experiences with e-health and digitalization.

On their final day, before going back to Germany, the delegates visited Bispebjerg Hospital to learn about the Danish approach to outpatient treatment and as well as the framework for future outpatient clinics at the hospital. The visit also included an introduction to the process of building the new Bispebjerg Hospital and a guided tour at the construction site. Rounding off the visit to Denmark was a presentation on the Danish healthcare system and hospital logistics by Hans Erik Henriksen, CEO of Healthcare DENMARK, who also hosted a final panel discussion to wrap up the delegation visit.
