Hospital

Denmark has the shortest average length of stay in hospital per patient in the European Union: 3,7 days in 2012.

Persistent efforts to streamline and optimize procedures and improve treatment quality in Danish hospitals have shortened the length of stays and reduced the number of readmissions. This enables patients to return home to well-known surroundings quicker, and it ensures a more efficient use of resources in the healthcare sector.

Digitalization is a key element in achieving coherent clinical pathways by giving healthcare professionals in hospitals access to any patient’s data and test results. Such new digital communicative initiatives help healthcare professionals save time and give patients a better treatment experience. Denmark is the first country ever to establish national standards for interoperability of personal health technologies that rely on the guidelines from the Continua Health Alliance.

Denmark has a long tradition of thoroughly monitoring and registering when and why citizens are in contact with the healthcare sector. A network of more than 50 national databases contain information on more than 60 different areas of disease and prevention. The use of unique and personal civil registration numbers makes it possible to trace patients across various databases, which creates great opportunities for clinical research and development within the healthcare sector.

The expansion of e-health in Denmark is based on public-private cooperation between the government, the regions, the municipalities, and the system providers. This has brought innovation and implementation to a level where nearly all basic information from the various healthcare sectors has been digitalized and made shareable.
